Dave’s dark descent into collecting/madness

Microsoft takes on Apple in the tablet and music market, Apple offers a Goldilocks-sized tablet, and Gawker does something useful for once. It’s episode 40 of Technophilia: Dave’s dark descent into collecting/madness.

This week: Dave develops a disturbing new hobby: collecting old Nintendo games. Will he ever own every game? No. Will he spend all of his money trying? Probably. And James talks but Enemy Unknown, his new favorite game.

But first, as always, the headlines:

And, the gaming news!

This week in “What You Been Usin?”, we hear from our open source correspondent Alex Mayer about Unetbootin. Justin talks about his new MacBook Pro, which isn’t actually new. He also wants you to read The Worst Things For Sale, because it’s hilarious.

Chat room during show taping its a good idea. Bad thing it would be mostly a "friendly" exchange with Dave. Plenty of "Bing You" bombs lol.

So you guys have talked about consumerism and debt in our culture a few times. I also seem to remember someone bringing up budgets and the fact that most people don't use them. I actually do use a budget. For a long time I kept one on a Excel/Google Doc spreadsheet along with a transaction register. I've done that for quite a while but recently I've been thinking about trying something new. I've looked into Quicken, and there is also Mint that is free online. There are also many others online such as YNAB and etc. So my question here is do you guys use budgets? If so how do you do it? Old school pen and paper or spreadsheet or do you have a program you use? Any suggestions?

Also, and this one is more for James, I read your write up about VPNs and it was really great. I would like to get one and I've been looking into it. Let's say hypothetically for completely legal purposes. Problem is I tried to explain it to my wife so she would be on board with me and she didn't get it. She is very much not a techie so she doesn't really understand torrenting in general just what she gets out of it if I do it for her. She doesn't understand the point to spending this money or what the VPN does. She also is worried that using a VPN is not legal or will somehow bring scrutiny on us. I'm sure you can understand James and Justin also being married. Any ideas on how to explain it to her in a way that she could get because I can't really think of anything. I want to assure her that it is a good thing, and have her understand even metaphorically what it does and that it is not illegal to simply have a VPN.

This was longer that I though it would be sorry.

Thanks guys looking forward to next week!

You guys are great! Actually just discovered your podcast last Wednesday. Since I can listen to headphones all day at work I went back and have basically listened to ALL of your shows in a week. I had a couple of things I wanted to ask you guys to talk about if you'd like but I'll probably throw them up later. Love your guy's stuff, keep it up. Dave, die in a fire!

@saturnalius Kathy takes care of the budget for us. She tracks everything, but we also try to live within a set budget. $50 for food per week, for example. We can talk more about it during the episode.

@saturnalius Thanks for the feedback. Difficult topic, but we'll try to address next week.

Personally, I don't budget; just don't need to. Will talk about that next week too though.

Welcome, Saturnalius! For health reasons I don't recommend listening to all of our shows in a week, so I'm glad you're okay. Feel free to ask whatever you want here, on Facebook or Twitter. We try to be responsive.

I listed to about 27 episodes in a week.(9 hours of technophilia a day. That was awesome)

I'm mostly OK thanks for the concern. It was a great time. Each one was better than the last. @jhpot
